Stone Tile Polishing and Sealing

Natural stone is hard wearing and sustainable, however, if not treated correctly it can be susceptible to staining and this is why sealers are used to protect the stone to prolong their life and their look. After cleaning your stone advice is given to protect your stone as there are many different variations of stone sealer on the market. The main thing to know is basically there are two types of sealer.

The first type of sealer is a Topical sealer, this coating sits on top of the surface and will protect against water, oil and any food contaminants i.e. Sauces or liquids.

They typically produce a polished appearance on the surface of the stone but in some cases can darken the stone slightly altering the look. This type of sealant can wear quite quickly especially in high footfall areas as it sits on the surface of the tile but can give off an appealing look to the tile.
The second type of sealer is a Penetrating or Impregnating sealer which penetrates into the surface of the tile and protects the microscopic pores of the tile.

Penetrating sealants do not alter the natural beauty of the tile as a topical sealant can but are less resistant to the protection of the surface from scratches and abrasions.

Having said that this sealant works from below the surface of the tile and will require less maintenance than a topical sealant would.

Correct Sealer

Deciding on the correct sealer requires the knowledge of your stone, generally, topical sealers are used to protect porous stones such as limestone and travertine, where penetrating sealers work well with less porous stones such as marble and granite.

Client Comment Brighton

Tile Design and Restoration stripped, deep cleaned and re-sealed my Travertine floor. I thought the floor was ruined until Peter returned it to look like it had just been fitted.

I have asked Peter to quote for all our bathroom tile restoration as well.
